I did not plan when I began writing these chapters to make an entire book, but only to put down the more or less unusual impressions, the events and adventures, of certain quiet pilgrimages in country roads. But when I had written down all of these things, I found I had material in plenty. "What shall I call it now that I have written it?" I asked myself. At first I thought I should call it "Adventures on the Road," or "The Country Road," or something equally simple, for I would not have the title arouse any appetite which the book itself could not satisfy. One pleasant evening I was sitting on my porch with my dog sleeping near me, and Harriet not far away rocking and sewing, and as I looked out across the quiet fields I could see in the distance a curving bit of the town road. I could see the valley below it and the green hill beyond, and my mind went out swiftly along the country road which I had so recently travelled on foot, and I thought with deep satisfaction of all the people I had met on my pilgrimages—the Country Minister with his problems, the buoyant Stanleys, Bill Hahn the Socialist, the Vedders in their garden, the Brush Peddler. I thought of the Wonderful City, and of how for a time I had been caught up into its life. I thought of the men I met at the livery stable, especially Healy, the wit, and of that strange Girl of the Street. And it was good to think of them all living around me, not so very far away, connected with me through darkness and space by a certain mysterious human cord. Most of all I love that which I cannot see beyond the hill.

My husband and I found a beautiful, green, hardcover 1907 publication of this book at an estate sale having never heard of it and got it with the sole intention of using it as a coffee table decoration. Well one day I happened to flip it open and read the intro/foreword aloud, and we fell in love! I am 27 and my husband is 32 and we have LOVED reading this book out loud to each other at night after putting our young kids to bed. It's funny and well-written but not so antiquated that it's exhausting to read or follow along with. If you live in the city but have a soft spot in your heart for the country or slower, better days, you simply MUST treat yourself to this book. And if you're really lucky you will find an old, original copy one day which makes it even more enjoyable and sentimental. But since those go for around $25 on eBay, I was happy to find these simple, cheaper paperback copies to give as gifts to friends and family. :)Product details

The Friendly Road New Adventures in Contentment David Grayson 9781537305479 Books Reviews
A Gem of early 20th century writing with great insight into the dynamic tensions of the briefly earthbound spiritual being in the most poetic terms. All poised in the melancholic tradition. "Adventure" is strangely an apt term here, as most of us 21st century citizens of earth would laugh at what appears to be such an gross overstatement-- Adventures in Contentment! Yet those of us moderns who can tame our socially popular "Been there done that..." attitude about life are offered a portal to contentment by learning to see the world in a new light, regardless of current surroundings and conditions.
Good reading but such small print I don't have it read yet. It takes work to read it.
This is a good book for quiet reading in the evening. As you go along with the farmer you will find interesting characters and words to carry with you.
I started by downloading the version. When I tried to start reading it, my Touch hung for about 5 min, then rebooted. I then downloaded the ePub version and converted it to MOBI using Calibre. That version also hung and rebooted my Touch. Finally, after using Calibre to convert it to TXT format, and uploading that version, I am able to read the book.
David Grayson's story "A Day of Pleasant Bread" has been read in our family as a yearly Christmas story for at least five decades. The author's delightful phrases, evocative descriptions, humorous turns and quips, great dialogue and practical and simple philosophy, remain a favorite. Who can forget the description of Harriet's breakfast, the crunch of the snow or the clear air that "goes to one's head like wine"; or the discovery of the goldmine of the "cold and starving" millionaire neighbors on Christmas morning! And the remainder of his stories are equally as good...!
The title is what drew me to this book. After reading it, "adventures" might be a bit strong of a word. "Little events" might be a better description. Regardless, I found it a very pleasant work to read. The author leaves his rat race life in the city and moves to the country to farm. The book is his reflections on the simple things in life that end up being truly fulfilling. One of my favorite quotes is in reference to his having time to read in the winter evenings "Let the wind blow outside and the snow drift in piles around the doorway and the blinds rattle--I have before me a whole long pleasant evening". That's the way I felt as I read the book. I only took a break from reading it because I had to.
I read Adventures in Contentment because it was my Father's favorite book. Although nearly a century has passed since Mr. Grayson's adventures. It would afford us much benefit to heed his sentiments. A life in the country may not be possible for all of us--it's presently not for me--but life is sweeter if we'll turn off the set early enough to spend time in a god book, or to rise a little earlier so we can step outside and hear the birds before the sound of traffic drowns them out, or planting a little garden to work in. I not only recommend reading this book, but reading it periodically and sharing it with a friend.
